Poker Run for Alaina Firman, Age 3 yrs 8 months

 Saturday, August 28, 2010

Alaina Firman, now 3 years and 8 months old, was a walking, talking, cheerful 2 year old little girl. Then on May 15th, 2009, she was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, tumors of the brain and spine.

Her 1st surgery was an e.v.d., which is a tube that drained fluid off her brain. The 2nd surgery was to remove the golf ball sized tumor from the back of her head. That was a 9 hour procedure. Since then, she has had 11 more surgeries, due to complications.

Her 4th surgery, which was exploratory to find a hole in her intestines, caused by steroids that she was on to reduce the swelling in her brain after the tumor removal.

Alain spent 7 months in the hospital, taking chemo and dealing with the effects of the chemo. She had other complications like allergic reactions, one of which put her back in PICU (pediatric intensive care unit), sedated, paralyzed and intubated.  We all thought we would lose her. After 2 weeks in PICU, she was put back in Aflac, which is where all the cancer and blood disorder patients are. She was doing very well and then she was sent home.

She had been sent home before, but everyone knew that she would have to return soon due to fever and blood counts. This time she wasn’t on any therapies, so we hoped she would stay home! She did!

Alaina has been home since the end of November. She has had many MRI’s and one showed that the tumors not only grew but had spread. Now they say they are looking somewhat better, but the chances of being tumor free is very slim.

Right now she is on chemo every 2 weeks at the hospital, and once every 28 days at home. She had her last MRI on July 9th, and we’re waiting for the results. She is doing well physically, but no one can tell what’s in her brain, so we have to wait on the results.

She can crawl, talk and can surely express herself. So we would really love it if you would Ride to cure our Lainabug!
